India's satellite destruction test was a 'terrible thing', says Nasa chief
Nasa has criticised India's satellite destruction test as a “terrible, terrible thing” that could have taken the lives of six astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Last Wednesday, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi announced that it had managed to shoot down one of its own low-orbit satellites.
The test, codenamed Mission Shakti, was designed to show that India was a "space power" that could defend itself against satellite threats.
However, the US space agency's chief, Jim Bridenstine, said that the risk of debris colliding with the ISS had risen by 44pc over a period of 10 days due to the test.
He claimed Nasa had identified 400 different pieces of orbital debris.
