Do e-cigarettes help smokers to quit smoking ?
A lot of people use e-cigarettes in order to quit smoking. It is more effective than any other treatment. A trial has been made about this subject and shows different things.
The study has been carried out among 886 people. 160 of them have stopped smoking with the help of e-cigarettes when only 88 with nicotine-replacement treatment.
Public Health England has already proved that e-cigarettes are 95% less dangerous for health than cigarettes. A researcher based in Queen Mary University of London said :
"Although a large number of smokers report that they have quit smoking successfully with the help of e-cigarettes, health professionals have been reluctant to recommend their use because of the lack of clear evidence from randomised controlled trials."
It means that the use of e-cigarettes is very effective but researchers have not made enough studies about it so they can't recommend it for the moment.
People who were dependent and already failed to stop smoking have been separated in two groups. The first group are the people who received a nicotine-remplacement treatment and the second received e-cigarettes with supply for it. The results are very clear. First of all, the group who received the e-cigarettes are more likely to stop smoking. In addition, they reduced their smoking by 50%. Moreover, the different nicotine-replacement treatment were the cause of irritations and nausea.
Howbeit these results have some limitation because some people who had to use the nicotine-replacement treatment put less effort in it so it is partly unrepresentative.
To conclude, e-cigarettes are very effective and even more effective than the nicotine-replacement treatment but we haven't enough informations for the moment to prescribe it to somkers in order to quit smoking.
